The National Commission for the Investigation of 10.29 Itaewon Disaster and the Prevention of Recurrence(hereinafter referred to as the National Commission) was established on September 13, 2024, following the enactment of the “Special Act to Protect the Rights of Victims of 10.29 Itaewon Disaster, and to Investigate the Truth and the Prevention Recurrence.”
The National Commission is an independent investigative body established to heal the community and assist in the creation of a safer society by uncovering the truth about the cause of 10.29 Itaewon disaster, the recovery process, and follow-up measures. The National Commission will also help to memorialize the victims and establish measures to protect the rights of victims and prevent recurrence.
All victims(including the victims' families, those who participated in emergency rescue and recovery outside of their duties, as well as those who operated businesses or worked in the vicinity of the affected area, and those who suffered physical, mental, or economic damage) can apply for an investigation. The deadline for submitting applications is June 30, 2025.
In addition, the National Commission accepts evidence that are necessary for the investigation, such as photos, audio and video records, and testimonies from the day of the disaster. The National Commission will offer rewards for provided evidence, after deliberating on the accuracy and importance of the evidence. The identity and contents of the report will be kept confidential.
The National Commission welcomes applications from victims and all evidence from citizens.
